Diesel Mechanic

JOB SUMMARY:
Maintain plant equipment to provide maximum safety, quality, and performance. Deliver preventative and routine maintenance tasks to Holland and Customer Equipment according to the customer‘s specification, within the time allotted, in safe and cost effective manner.  Produce timely repairs meeting customer’s specifications to rail cars, pusher cars, and tie down on rail trains. Maintain and repair mobile and heavy equipment used in the facility. The facility has forklifts, front end loaders, backhoe, tractors, excavators, cranes, and manlifts. Must have a working knowledge of diesel engines and hydraulic systems and ability to identify problems and appropriate repair procedures, perform preventive maintenance. Personnel must follow all general and safety policies and procedures as established by the Safety Manual.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
·       Conduct preventative maintenance on all plant equipment
·       Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary
·       Maintain inventory of spare parts and order parts as required
·       Create and maintain Routine PM and Maintenance records
·       Operate and repair forklift, scissor and man lift, all types of Railroad Heavy Equipment. 
·       Examine and test electrical systems and equipment’s 
·       Attend annual Holland Safety Training & FRA Roadway Workers Protection Training
·       Use of all required tools and equipment for this position
·       Follow non-emergency, emergency, and shut down plant procedures
·       Corrects vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units.
·       Report all safety violations and unsafe conditions
·       Keep work area clean and organized
·       All plant positions will be cross trained to other positions such as hookman, pointman, grinder, and etc. to allow for coverage and relief as needed
·       May at times be required to utilize company vehicle to move around the facility

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
·       Ability to perform required daily stretching exercises
·       Throughout entire length of shift, ability to stand; use hands and fingers to touch, feel, handle, or manipulate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; speak and hear; walk, stoop, kneel, bend at the waist, crouch, and crawl
·       Ability to continually operate a all pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic tooling and equipment needed to repair railroad equipment.
·       Ability to turn 80’ rail upright using a turning bar (with the assistance of one co-worker with another turning bar) if the rail turns over on the transfer racks
·       Ability to lift up to 70 lbs
·       Audio & Visual acuity
·       Willingness to utilize all personal protective equipment

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
·       Exposure on a regular basis to extreme weather conditions.
·       Exposure to dust and smoke during operations.
·       Exposure to noisy conditions

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); associates degree preferred
·       Small Engine Repair, Diesel Engine Repair: 2 year (Preferred) - certified recommended, but not required.
  • Prior mechanic experience working on major brand 4 and 8 cycle
  • Qualified to operate forklift
  • Welding capabilities preferred
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Know the different kinds of rail defects (e.g., salt burns, piped rail, gouges, wheel burns, etc.) and tolerances for secondhand and new rail.
  • Have a working knowledge of all required reference/training materials for this position (as listed above)
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
·       Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment testing required by Holland L.
  • Travel up to 15% included ground & air travel
  • Maintain valid driver’s license
